After passing tech and getting solid scores in all the static events (except cost), Terps racing was on a roll. Despite almost no driver training time, and blowing a motor the day before leaving for competition, the Terp’s managed to finish in the top 25-30 for all dynamic events. They seeded 76 out of 92 for Endurance. It was the perfect setup for a team that has worked tirelessly all year to redeem the legend and reclaim the former glory of the UMD Terps Racing SAE Program after 4 years of DNF in endurance. And then tragedy struck. A leaky gasket caused some oil to drip onto an exhaust manifold, causing smoke to rise from the engine compartment and the car to be black flagged and retied early from the race.

But there’s hope. The team is going to take this solid car out to Lincoln, Nebraska in 30 days for a final shot this year at ending Maryland’s terrible luck.

To all you FSAE competitors out there, I hope you had a fun, safe, and exciting weekend.

Nope. Our car was amazing in 2011, we brought home 4th and took it to SCCA Solo Nationals and set a fast lap record in our class. Then it all went to shit. A very bright and charismatic engineer took over as team lead, and pushed hard to switch to a single cylinder and expiriment with a carbon fiber monocoque. It gave us MASSIVE aero - tons and tons of downforce, but we could never get it to run reliably. I just don’t think the singles are up to the task of moving that much weight - there’s a few teams running them competitively, but even they admit they are maintenance nightmares. We went back to the four cylinder this year and things were looking amazing until this.

I was in Michigan in ‘13, our single grenaded on lap 22 of 24 in Endurance after we did phenomenal in all the other events. We barely missed design finals, but we were still looking at a top 10 finish, but not finishing endurance dropped us down to 42nd. It was absolutely heartbreaking after all the months of work.

my alma mater’s team faced a similarly tragic fate. Car tested fine for a month prior, but developed a phantom fueling issue through all the dynamic events that ultimately made it get black flagged from enduro for being too slow

That sucks, I’m sorry to hear it.
